Sheltering and Empowering Children

Founded in 1966 by Sister Maria Rosa Leggol, Sociedad Amigos de los Niños provides housing, safety, health, education, and nurturing care for Honduran children and families at risk.

Today SAN is an agent of social transformation, offering Honduras' most vulnerable children shelter and safety in its homes and youth farm, and then empowering them with education, vocational training, scholarships, and work experience to help them lead self-sufficient lives as adults.

In a single generation, SAN's grown children now contribute to society as business managers, teachers, and engineers. Many of their own children attend university, breaking generational cycles of poverty.

Sister Maria Rosa Leggol

The founder of Sociedad Amigos de los Niños, Sister Maria Rosa Leggol has raised, educated, and mothered tens of thousands of Honduras’ at-risk children: abandoned, orphaned, homeless, or witness to horrific violence. An orphan herself before she became a School Sister of Saint Francis, she set out on this labor of love and humanity in 1966 with very few resources but a strong sense of God’s plan. She is widely known as the Mother Teresa of Honduras and has been honored with dozens of awards, including two honorary doctorates from Marquette University and the University of St. Francis in Ontario, Canada.
