Transition Students

As the children of Sociedad Amigos de los Niños graduate from high school, they are eligible to move into a boys or girls transition home where they can further their education as well as learn the necessary life skills to be successful as they move out onto their own.

Why did the transition program start?

During high school, all students of Sociedad Amigos de los Niños are given career aptitude tests and discuss options for their futures with counselors. During their senior year of high school, they take the university entrance exam and based on the results will have various opportunities for which university or trade school they can attend. Since the start of the transition program in 2015, students have studied for a career as nurses, social workers, lab technicians, chefs, dentists, psychologists, engineers, journalists, Physical Education teachers and advertisers.

When they enter the transition program, the students move into either a boys or girls home with anywhere from 4-9 students, depending on the year. They learn life and housekeeping skills such as opening and managing a bank account, learning to use public transportation, budgeting, shopping for groceries and household items, cooking and cleaning. Each home has a Tia to help with learning these skills and to assist as needed. SAN also ensures they are making the transition from high school classes to college classes and are giving whatever opportunities are needed to ensure their success.

Savings Accounts

Recently we established savings accounts for the transition students from sponsors. When a transition student completes their studies and is ready to move out on their own, we are able to give them funds collected during their time in the transition home to help with such items as the deposit on their apartment, first month’s rent, basic household items needed to get started.  We are hoping to collect $15 each month for each student towards their savings account which would accumulate to $720 at the end of four years. This is the average minimum pay for two months in Honduras.

What Can I do to Help?

Just as with our own children, we know young people are not ready to be completely independent when they graduate from high school. The SAN Transition Program helps the young adults further their education to have a chance at a brighter and more successful future while also teaching life skills.

The average monthly need for a SAN student while living in a transition home is $340/month.  This amount is typically covered by 1-8 sponsors per student.  You can also contribute to a student’s savings account during their schooling at $15/month.
